After asking his supporters to take a pledge to vote for him, Donald Trump inspired even more comparisons to German dictator Adolf Hitler. But in an interview this morning, Trump brushed off the comparisons as “ridiculous.”
While on the Today Show this morning, he was asked about the comparisons to the Nazi leader’s salute. “I think it’s ridiculous,” he said, saying that his crowds have fun doing it. He even said that people at his events have chanted for him to “do the swear-in.”
Trump also told Savannah Guthrie that it wasn’t until the interview that he realized that it was a “problem.” He said that “If there’s anything wrong with it, I wouldn’t do it.”
When Matt Lauer asked if he would now consider stopping the pledge, Trump only said, “I will certainly look into it” because he “doesn’t want to offend anybody.”
Critics of Trump’s campaign have compared him to Hitler or Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Even Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto compared Trump to them, notes The New York Times. Trump has said that he wants to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and will force the Mexican government to pay for it.
