Drew Barrymore will be the latest movie star to join the modern golden age of television by starring in a Netflix series that pairs her with Timothy Olyphant.
Netflix announced the series on March 18 and said it will air in 2017. Titled Santa Clarita Diet, the show was created by Victor Fresco, the writer behind the cult comedies Better Off Ted and Andy Richter Controls The Universe.
The single-camera series find Barrymore and Olyphant as married realtors in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Clarita. When Barrymore’s character has a dramatic life-changing event, their lives go in an entirely new and dangerous path.
“The genius of casting Timothy and Drew, combined with my comedic… oh wait, that’s Cindy’s quote. I agree with what Cindy is about to say,” Fresco said, jokingly referring to what Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland said.
“The genius casting of Timothy and Drew combined with Victor’s unique comedic sensibility will delight, and definitely surprise, our members around the world,” Holland said.
Barrymore’s acting roles have slowed down as of late. She starred in last year’s Miss You Already and 2014’s Blended, but hasn’t done much work on the big screen lately. She’s been much more active as a producer, recently working on How To Be Single.
As for Olyphant, he has been recurring as a twisted version of himself on Fox’s The Grinder. He’s best known for roles on the Western series Deadwood and Justified. He also has a role in Oliver Stone’s upcoming Snowden.
