David Alan Grier said on Twitter that he was going to be the first African American to play Colonel Sanders for KFC, but was he serious?
“Breaking News: David Alan Grier has been cast as the first African American Colonel Sanders in the new KFC ad campaign,” the Carmichael Show star wrote on March 3.
Unfortunately, this was just a joke. KFC executive Kevin Hochman told The New York Daily News that the company has not picked another actor for the role.
“We are very excited to learn that Mr. Grier is such a big fan of KFC and The Colonel. We’re a big fan of him as well. We hope to continue the conversation with him over a $5 Fill Up,” Hochman said.
The idea of a new actor playing Col. Sanders seemed legitimate because KFC is already on their second since launching a new ad campaign in May 2015. First, Saturday Night Live comedian and current announcer Darrell Hammond had the role, but he was then replaced by Norm Macdonald in August. Macdonald is an SNL veteran too.
While we won’t be seeing Grier as Sanders any time soon, he will be back on NBC in The Carmichael Show on March 8. He also played the Cowardly Lion in The Wiz Live!.
