Even though Supernatural was recently renewed for a 12th season, stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have been brainstorming potential endings for their hit sci-fi show.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Padalecki and Ackles, who have portrayed the Winchester brothers since 2005, opened up about where their characters could end up in the series finale.
“Part of me, loving Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, always thought it’d be great to see the boys against insurmountable odds and to freeze-frame on them and just hear stuff in the background,” Padalecki explained. “You don’t know if they die, you don’t know if they live, but you know that they’re going to go out in a blaze of glory.”
Ackles was less sure about his ideal ending, but thought his character Dean dying for his brother Sam would make for a good finale.
“I don’t really know where it’s going to go,” Ackles said. “I always thought Dean would make the ultimate sacrifice for his brother. I guess if I had to choose something, that’s probably what I would choose.”
Both Padalecki and Ackles agreed that as long as Sam and Dean are “alive” and “keep fighting” the show could go on for years to come.
Off screen, Padalecki and Ackles are close friends and dedicated dads. Padalecki is a father to sons Thomas, 4, Shepherd, 2, and Ackles has a daughter, Justice, 2, with actress Danneel Harris.
Supernatural airs Wednesday at 9pm on The CW.
