The History Channel announced on March 17 that the popular scripted series Vikings will not only get a fifth season, but a new star.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who is best known for starring on The Tudors and also has a role in the new Roots miniseries, will join the cast. His role was not announced.
“The brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television,” Jana Bennett, President and General Manager of History. “Vikings has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Meyers will become a bigger part of the History family after his incredible performance in our upcoming production of Roots.”
Meyers will next be seen in Roots, which the A+E Networks will debut on May 30. The Golden Globe winner also starred on NBC’s short-lived Dracula, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Albert Nobbs and Woody Allen’s Match Point.
Vikings is produced by MGM TV and was created by Michael Hirst, who also worked on The Tudors. It is currently in its fourth season and new episodes air on Thursdays at 10 p.m.
