Joseph Gordon-Levitt will work with Amazon studios to develop a period drama on the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. The actor will produce and could star in the movie.

The project is currently titled K Troop and will be set in the years after the Civil War, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The main character will be Major Lewis Merrill, the leader of the U.S. Army’s K Troop, which stopped the growth of the KKK’s first incarnation in 1871. It is based on Matthew Pearl’s upcoming Slate article.

Gordon-Levitt, who could play Merrill, will produce under his hitRECord Films. He does not have a writer set.

This is the second major success for Amazon Studios in recent weeks. Last month, the company won distribution rights for Woody Allen’s 2016 film with Blake Lively and Kristen Stewart.

Gordon-Levitt has several films in the pipeline, including Oliver Stone’s Snowden and a musical comedy with Channing Tatum.
