Producer George Martin died on March 8 at the age of 90 and the heartfelt tributes from the surviving members of the Beatles reminds us of the importance he had in their lives.

While manager Brian Epstein helped The Beatles take that first major step into the music world in England, the group might never have been heard from if it weren’t for Martin. After the group was turned down by other labels, Martin signed them to the small EMI label Parlophone, which wasn’t known at all for rock and roll.

From the very beginning, Martin was a major influence on the Fab Four. Although he looked like he would have fit in better with their parents, he knew music and they knew it. They listened to his advice and more often than not, his suggestions made their music even better.

It is impossible to whittle down Martin’s contributions to just a list of 10, but here we go…
