Days after the iconic singer Prince passed away, comedian Dave Chappelle paid tribute to the star during his four hour comedy set in San Francisco, California.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that during the set, Chappelle admitted to the audience it was difficult to come and perform on the show, but he did so because his band reminded him Prince “would definitely not condone that.”
The two had an interesting relationship Vulture reported, with Prince adding Chappelle’s face on the cover of his single “Breakfast Can Wait” in response to a Chappelle Show sketch about pancakes and basketball where Chappelle did his own impression of Prince dressed as Zorro.
Chappelle also told the crowd he didn’t know about his death until the media asked for comments. He wondered why they had called him specifically and he said, “I’ll tell you what: I didn’t know him well, but I knew him well.”
His band played some Prince songs, including “Nothing Compares 2 U” and at one point, Chappelle said “This is black 9/11. It’s so much better that we grieve together.”
Prince passed away unexpectedly April 21 and at this time, no official cause of death has been released.
