Move over, Snow White: there's about to be a new Disney Princess in town.
On March 31, The Hollywood Reporter noted that a live-action film about another Grimm fairy tale character is in the works at Disney. The studio has purchased a script by Jason Merz, entitled Red, about the character Rose Red, which re-imagines Rose Red as Snow White's sister, who is tasked with breaking the curse that makes Snow White fall permanently asleep after she bites the Evil Queen's poison apple.
Disney's purchase of a Snow White property comes just as another major film involving similar characters - The Huntsman: Winter's War, the prequel to Snow White and The Huntsman (2012) - is about to hit theaters. The similarity is not entirely a coincidence. Evan Daugherty, who made the pitch to Disney for Red, also wrote Snow White and the Huntsman.
Snow White and the Huntsman isn't the only Snow White film in recent years. Mirror Mirror was also released in 2012 - but Disney has already been getting plenty of mileage out of the character through ABC's TV series Once Upon a Time, which, as we reported, celebrated its 100th episode last month.
