Former NHL player Georges Laraque helped stop a kidnapping at a Montreal park on Saturday.
The incident happened at Jeanne-Mance Park in Montreal. A young girl was in the park with her parents when a man came up and spoke to her. The man then allegedly grabbed the girl and walked away. Laraque was playing a celebrity baseball game nearby when the incident took place. He surrounded the suspect with about 20 to 30 other people after he was wrestled to the ground until he was in police custody, according to CBC News. One of the staff members from the baseball game called 911.
"I just wanted to make sure that if he got up that I was going to tackle him right away," Laraque said. "I have twins and this could happen to anyone. We've heard stories of a child being abducted and to see [something] like that — it's pretty scary."
Laraque played in the NHL for 12 years. He last played in 2010 for the Montreal Canadiens. He had 53 goals, 153 points and 1,126 penalty minutes in his 12-year NHL career, according to NHL.com.
Police are questioning the suspect and say that he may need to undergo a psychological evaluation. The suspect could face charges as early as Monday.
