Longtime CBS newsman Morley Safer died Thursday, just one week after his retirement. He was 84.
Safer was born in Canada where he first began covering news for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He joined CBS in 1964 and in 1970, became a correspondent for 60 Minutes, the program he remained at until he filed his last report on March 13, 2016.
CBS News noted that Safer’s health was on the decline when he announced his retirement, which was part of the reason he called it quits. He is said to have watched the hour-long special about his career from his Manhattan home on May 15.
It a recent statement about retiring Safer said, "It's been a wonderful run, but the time has come to say goodbye to all of my friends at CBS and the dozens of people who kept me on the air."
He is survived by his wife and daughter.
