After Anton Yelchin tragically lost his life yesterday in a freak car accident, we look back at some of the noteworthy roles of the Star Trek actor.
One of Yelchin's first roles was on an episode of ER when he was just nine years old. Yelchin played a boy who finds out his parents didn't survive a car accident. It's a terrific example of the actor's talents at such a young age. A clip from the episode is below.
Yelchin went on to lead the 2001 film Delivering Milo where he played a boy about to be born who needs to be convinced to go to Earth. The film also starred Albert Finney and Bridget Fonda and can be watched in its entirety on YouTube. Yelchin also had supporting roles in movies opposite actors like Robert de Niro in 15 Minutes, Morgan Freeman in Along Came a Spider and Anthony Hopkins in Hearts in Atlantis.
The Russian-born actor also did TV work, including a guest appearance in a season four episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm as a little boy magician refusing to reveal the secret of his card trick to Larry David. You can watch clips from the episode on YouTube by clicking here and here.
A couple of years later, Yelchin appeared in Alpha Dog as Zack, a character who gets kidnapped because his brother owes some drug money to people. Sounds bad? Well, here's a picture of Yelchin's kidnapped character skinny dipping with Amber Heard and Amanda Seyfried.
In 2007, Yelchin appeared as the lead in Charlie Bartlett as a rich kid who becomes a therapist to the kids at his school by giving them advice and prescription drugs to become popular. Hope Davis played his mother and Robert Downey Jr. played the school's principal.
Yelchin then took roles in two of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all time. He played Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation opposite Christian Bale and Sam Worthington. Here he is saving Worthington and getting the pleasure of saying a classic line that's been a staple of every Terminator movie.
But, of course, the world knows him from Star Trek where he played the lovable and brainy teenage prodigy Chekov, whose wit was a major help to the crew of the USS Enterprise and provided some comic relief.
Since Star Trek, Yelchin appeared opposite Mel Gibson and a beaver puppet, voiced a Studio Ghibli character, played a Smurf, had a role in an Aardman animated movie, and recently appeared in the critically-acclaimed Green Room released in April.
Yelchin reprises Chekov in Star Trek Beyond coming out July 22 and voices the lead in Trollhunters, a Guillermo del Toro Netflix animated series that premieres in December. He also has the psychological thriller Thoroughbred, the sci-fi flick Rememory starring Peter Dinklage, drama We Don't Belong Here and the romance Porto to be released. Those four films are all without release dates, but Yelchin has completed filming for all of them, according to Variety.
His career was cut incredibly short, but Yelchin gave us some incredible and truly memorable roles. His talents will sorely be missed. RIP Anton.
