John Rayburn’s stress level is at an all-time high. He goes to what the Rayburns use to deal with stress … alcohol. Nolan startles John and John tells Nolan he knows he talked to Potts and that all he is doing is looking out for Nolan. John’s night gets even better when Meg calls him and tells him Kevin left the hotel. Have another drink John. John then starts hallucinating and seeing his older brother, Danny, who asks John …”When is it going to end?”
Kevin is a drug-fueled man on a mission. He drives right up to Lowery’s house and tosses the drugs on his lawn, hoping this makes things right. You should know better Kevin. Lowery’s guard chases after him which causes Kevin to run a stop sign and collide with another car. John gets a call about the accident and immediately arrives. They have to arrest Kevin since they found cocaine in his car. John whispers to Kevin to not say a word and that he didn’t square things with Lowery.
Lowery gets one more chance to get back into business with his sketchy business partner giving him one more shot. Lowery and John have their first meeting during the day where Lowery tells him thanks to Kevin’s mistakes he feels John has more to hide than he does. Lowery says John is going to help him or he will release Danny’s tapes.
John is trying to keep everything straight. He is constantly lying to the police and his mother. He has the grieving father who is a wildcard and Lowery has evidence over him. Add Kevin’s mistakes into the mix and I see why John drinks. He has another vision of Danny while he smokes a cigarette to relax. John has a crucial choice … does he help Lowery or not? If he doesn’t, it comes out that John Rayburn is a lie. (I’m glad we get to see Ben Mendelshon this season. He is an excellent antagonist). John is even hearing it at his own home. Diana is questioning him about why her and the kids were sent away and why he still defends Danny.
Sally is taking a break from investigating and looking at sympathy cards when she meets a young woman curious about the inn. The woman claims to be a musician and she is here for her son … Nolan. This is the woman Robert was paying $5,000 a month to, seemingly for a college fund for Nolan. Danny and his mother(her name is Eve) want Nolan to go to college. She came to get Nolan and Sally is firm that she will not keep paying her. I have this feeling she isn’t leaving anytime soon.
Meg is very busy this episode. She visits Kevin in jail and tells him Belle is upset and she will be his lawyer. She knows she must go visit Sally at inn even though she really doesn’t want to. Kevin tells her he needs serious help. Meg meets with John and finds out he might have to help Lowery. She finds out everything could unravel and is promised to take care of John’s family in the worst case scenario. Meg finally visits The Rayburn House and Sally brings up the secret account (which Meg knew about). Meg comes clean about it and Sally reaffirms to Meg that she is not going to continue payments. It only gets worse for Meg …
DEA Clay, Marco, Sheriff Aguirre and John are having a meeting. They feel Lowery is having a shipment coming soon since he declined the deal and Clay suggests they question local sources. John visits Hank, a veteran who gives him some patrol routes and will come to him with smuggling news. John and Marco inform the grieving father that Lowery backed out of the deal. We later see the father praying. I’m intrigued and suspicious.
Meg’s day continues to get worse when she gets a call from Susannah that they are letting her go from the firm. This causes Meg to go on a drinking binge and trying to reach Susannah. She sees Marco on a date and goes up to him, acting very drunk and inappropriate. She later bails Kevin out of jail and tells him Lowery backed out. She told Kevin she is staying, she is scared and wants to help. It is sad to see the lives of the Rayburn children spinning out of control.
Eve goes back for another chat with Sally. We see her on the phone with somebody before this stealing their credit card information. Eve meets with Sally and describes meeting Danny. Sally knows this is small talk to try and convince her to continue the payments. Sally refuses to cooperate.
Diana makes an interesting comment to John: “It feels like years since everyone was happy.” She is absolutely correct. John also gets a scary look at what his family would be like if he confessed. Lowery and John have another daytime meeting where John gives Lowery the patrol routes and tells him the DEA isn’t going to focus on the shipment at Sugar Loaf.
The DEA is preparing to go where they think Lowery’s shipment is coming in. They are especially prepared since Lowery sent his family away. John gives them some info about his local source Hank. John is going to hang at the office while they go take down Lowery.
John goes into solitude in his office, thinking about his choices. John sees his brother Danny for the third time. Danny makes John really question what he is doing. We wonder what this means as we see Lowery’s crew preparing for the arrival of the shipment while we see Lowery sitting in his bait shop, waiting to hear the good news.
Elena Cortez calls Lowery and tells him the shipment has successfully arrived. They get into the cars and drive off but shockingly are surprised by the DEA. This means that John didn’t keep his part of the deal. Danny is shocked that this means Lowery is going to come clean about everything and it will ruin John. Danny asks John the big question … does he think he can get out of the situation or could he not live with the lie anymore?
John’s phone rings and we know his heart skips a beat. Marco tells him they moved on Lowery. John goes to the bait shop and they find Lowery stabbed to death. This is interesting. Marco thinks it is over. I’m not so sure. John and Marco go visit the grieving father who looks guilty as can be. He tells them he did what they couldn't and shows them the knife he killed Lowery with.
John has a surprising look on his face. I can’t tell if he is scared or relieved …
