German officials announced that a gunman who fired shots in a cinema on Thursday is now dead.

CNN noted that Hesse Interior Minister Peter Beuth said the assailant, who was wearing a mask, went into the establishment in the small town of Viernheim around 3 p.m. and fired multiple shots.

After authorities were informed of the gunfire, they responded and fatally wounded the gunman.

"There were hostages in the vicinity of the individual. It was at this point that he was fatally shot by special forces," Beuth said. "I have no knowledge that anyone else was harmed."

Early reports claimed that several people were injured but those reports and the nature of any injuries have not yet been confirmed.

There are still several details surrounding the attack which are unclear and have not been released at this time. However, the U.S. Embassy has revealed that the suspect was believed to have used tear gas in the attack.

We will have more updates on this story as they become available.
