On June 10, The Conjuring 2 opened in movies theaters across the country. While a few moments feel a bit forced, the film mostly lives up to the fright that its predecessor inspired.
In this film, we once again investigate a haunting with Ed and Lorraine Warren. The movie begins with the controversy over the Amityville haunting and Lorraine’s fear to continue their investigations after having a premonition of her husband’s death. Despite the warnings, the Warren’s take on a case in Enfield, England where a family is being terrorized. The entity likes to possess the 11-year-old daughter as well as appearing on its own. Can the Warrens get to the bottom of the problem before the demon can take a life?
Vera Farmiga plays Lorraine Warren, and, as always, her portrayal is believable and memorable. The story is scary and the special effects are amazing. The director uses camera angles and movement to good effect for scares that will have you jumping out of your seat.
I did feel that certain areas of the dialogue were a bit cheesy and some of the possession scenes with Madison Wolfe, who played 11-year-old Janet Hodgson, were a little forced. These areas of the film kind of removed me from the story, but I was right back in it minutes later when the demon reared its ugly head again.
All in all, the movie was frightening, but I think it could have been tightened up a bit. I found the first movie in the series more disturbingly scary, but this one will have you hanging onto your seat as well. It’s worth the money to see it in a pitch black theater with the ultimate surround sound, which will add to the eerie feel.
I give it 3.5 stars.
