The NFL announced on Friday that the league and its Florida teams are donating money to support the victims and survivors of the Orlando mass shooting.
According to NFL.com, the league, Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will donate $400,000 to the OneOrlando Fund. The OneOrlando Fund was created by the town's mayor, Buddy Dyer, to help support the victims' families and the survivors of the Orlando shooting.
"Our City has just begun to recover from the impact of the Pulse tragedy," Dyer said. "The support of partners like the NFL and the NFL's three Florida-based teams sends a signal to our City that we are not in this alone. The money we are raising will provide a way to help us respond to the needs of our community, now and in the time to come. Words cannot begin to express how grateful we are for the outpouring of support from across the globe."
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said, "Our hearts goes out to the victims and their families," and the league will continue to look for ways to give their support.
On June 12, Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people at Pulse, a LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in the worst mass shooting in America. Mateen was shot and killed by police and 53 people were wounded. The NFL’s Florida teams aren’t the only professional sports teams in Florida to support the victims of the shooting. On June 17, MLB's Tampa Bay Rays dedicated their Pride Night to the victims of the shooting with all the proceeds going to the Pulse Victims Fund.
