In season 3, episode 2 of The Night Shift, the show starts immediately by resuming the previous episode and all of its drama.
While serving a term in Afghanistan, Auster is in a fight with a powerful man whose wife is going into labor. Auster ultimately shoots him in the shoulder and although the man is going to be fine, the chain of command was broken. Jennings is upset over his actions and tells him she is set to return home and to her daughter in two weeks and will not have him mess it up. The doctors prepare the woman for a C-section and once the procedure is complete, the baby boy is born but can’t breathe. After a few moments, the baby breathes.
Once the mother has fully recovered, the doctors hide the mother, her new baby and brother in a truck that will take them to a safe house in Kabul. Once the captain finds out the two went against local medical orders, he orders Auster to end his tour and return to Texas while also extending Jennings tour for an additional three months. Auster apologizes to Jennings for her having to miss out on seeing her daughter.
Back in the United States, a young boy named Frankie is injured in a car crash along with his mother. Jordan and TC have to enter a chest tube and fly the boy in a helicopter to the hospital. Joan, the mother, is later in a recovery room with her husband. TC says Frankie has a blood infection and needs a blood transfusion from a biological parent. When TC talks to the father, he says Frankie is adopted and the birth mother was a drug addict.
Later, TC asks Topher if he can find the records of Frankie’s birth mother. After having a tough time finding the mother, TC asks Frankie’s mom about his birth mother. She confesses that she saw the boy at a movie theater and later kidnapped him for her own at a mall because she could not have children. After hearing what she says, TC rushes out of her hospital room. Jordan comes up with a solution to find a good blood match and Frankie’s birth parents are immediately notified and are on the first plane from Texas to see their son. In an emotional scene, Frankie wakes up and the parents reunite with their son. Frankie instantly remembers the stuffed animal of his that his parents brought.
Throughout the episode, Kenny says he can be Topher’s life coach and gives him a bracelet that will track his health. Kenny later catches Topher giving the bracelet away to another doctor and sees Topher drinking soda and smoking a cigarette. After trying to help him get back on track throughout the night shift, Kenny says Topher is a grown man and can make his own decisions.
At another point in the episode, one patient, Mr. Martinez, is not feeling well. After a few tests are run, nothing abnormal is found and Martinez’s daughter, Carly, comes to see how her father is doing. Jordan and Shannon talk to Carly to learn more about Martinez’s health history. In the next scene, Jordan is called over to the room of Martinez because he blacked out. Carly says she blames the witch doctor that her father goes to for taking her father's money and not really helping his health. After Carly criticizes the witch doctor, Shannon implies Carly does not care enough about her father. Jordan brings Shannon aside to tell her to not bring emotion into the job and to be more professional. Suddenly, Martinez passes out again and will not wake up. After his daughter threatens to sue the hospital, Jordan then criticizes her for not spending enough time with her father and taking care of him.
Later, Jordan offers her an apology but Carly says she was right and that everything she worked hard for was for him. After losing his pulse, the doctors perform CPR and later the pulse and blood pressure increase to normal levels and he wakes up. Jordan encourages Martinez to move in with his daughter to take better care of himself. Shannon and Jordan later go out for Bloody Marys and invite two men they know over for drinks.
