Having older men in charge isn’t a new concept in life or television, but having middle-aged men who are not only formidable, but virile isn’t as common. Dougal MacKenzie, portrayed by Graham McTavish is a complex character with equal parts villain and hero. He is obsessed with putting the Scottish king on the throne and will do anything to make that happen. He inspires men to follow him, but he is ruthless in his methods.

All of his relationships are complicated. He and his brother Colum have a Biblical sibling rivalry going on; he seems to appreciate his nephew Jamie, but he is unsubtle in his lust for Claire. (He is rather lusty with women in general, so he may get partial clemency for that.) He is still sexually aggressive and often inappropriate with Claire, but it seems like his advances are welcome when it comes to other women. He is cunning, ruthless, persuasive, brave and has a lot of sex appeal.
All signs point to something big happening in this finale, and it likely that Dougal will be at the crux of it.
