Thousands of social media users, including many celebrities, showed that they have Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones’ back after she was attacked with hateful messages via Twitter.

The actress revealed that she had received a barrage of racist and sexist messages on Monday, July 18, which affected her deeply. In addition to that, Jones shared a screenshot of tweets she said were doctored to make it look like she was angrily firing back and using homophobic slurs. She asked her followers for help in finding out who was responsible for that.

The star then posted about how upset she was over everything.

“I feel like I'm in a personal hell. I didn't do anything to deserve this. It's just too much. It shouldn't be like this. So hurt right now,” she tweeted.

She followed that tweet up with another expressing her pain.

“I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the shit I got today...wrong.”

Many of her followers and several celebrities decided to combat the hate with love for her by using the hashtag #LoveforLeslieJ.

The hashtag was used in thousands of tweets and trended worldwide on Monday.

Jones’ movie meanwhile has received mixed reviews after its release this past weekend. Ever since the reboot was announced the subject has been talked about negatively via social media because of the decision to cast all female leads.
