On July 12, Lionsgate Home Entertainment released The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the third movie in the Divergent franchise. While the movie is better than its predecessor, it still has some flaws.
The third installment of this series finds Tris and Four leading a team of rebels beyond the city wall despite Evelyn locking it down. What they find behind it changes everything. Is the new society everything it claims to be? Can Tris and Four save Chicago from civil war? Will their relationship remain intact?
The characters in this film are stronger than the last. Tris is less of a damsel in distress and does things her own way. However, it is still Four who finds the truth and convinces Tris that she’s wrong, which irks a little. Caleb tries his best to redeem himself throughout the film. Peter is, as always, out for numero uno, which makes him one of the more interesting characters in the film.
The movie is quick paced and has a better story than the previous film, although it leans towards being misogynistic. Every woman in power in the film makes a terrible mistake and needs to be saved by a man in the end. Though Tris ultimately saves the day, it is only due to Caleb and Four that she is able to do so. Evelyn almost ends Chicago. A little more equality would have been nice.
Overall, the story is fun if you don’t look too deep. I haven’t read the book yet, so I can’t say how well it sticks by it, though I hear the middle is a bit different. If you’re a fan of the previous films, you will enjoy this one. I will definitely be checking out the final movie in 2017.
