Make it work, Tim Gunn! Today is this style guru, television personality, actor and genuine gentleman’s 63rd birthday. He is most known for his work on Project Runway, as well as its two spin-offs, Bravo's Tim Gunn's Guide to Style and Lifetime's Under the Gunn and his commentary on or about red carpet events.
Gunn was born and grew up in Washington, D.C. and was a champion swimmer in his youth. He earned his BFA on Sculpture from Corcoran College of Art and Design.
From 1982 to 2007, Gunn was a faculty member of Parsons the New School for Design and helmed the fashion design department as Chair at the school for seven years. He then moved on to become the chief creative officer for Liz Claiborne. He began his ongoing role on Project Runway in its first season in 2004. For this work, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award in 2013 for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program.
He has played versions of himself in shows Ugly Betty, How I Met Your Mother, Gossip Girl and Drop Dead Diva.
Gunn's book A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style, co-written with Kate Moloney was published in 2007.
His voice can be heard on Disney Junior’s Sofia the First as Baileywick.
Gunn received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater in 2009.
He has said that he's been single since a long-term relationship ended in the 1980's. He is involved in many LGBTQ causes and participated in the It Gets Better project, as well as being a critic of using animal fur in clothing.
