Morgan Freeman is in talks to star in Disney's live-action The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, based on the 1816 short story adapted into a popular ballet.
Freeman would play Drosselmeyer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Drosselmeyer is the godfather of Clara, a girl placed in charge of watching over a toy nutcracker that comes to life.
Mackenzie Foy, best known for playing the daughter of Matthew McConaughey's character in Interstellar, is said to play Clara, according to Variety. Ballet dancer Misty Copeland announced her involvement in the film in an Instagram post with a picture of the script.
Disney put What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Chocolat director Lasse Hallström in charge. Up-and-coming writer Ashleigh Powell gets her screenwriting debut adapting E.T.A. Hoffman's 200-year-old story.
Freeman will next be seen in Ben-Hur on Aug. 19. The actor recently appeared in Now You See Me 2 and London Has Fallen.
