I brought you in this world, I can take you out. That was the lesson that last night’s ‘Walcott Prep’ episode of Wayward Pines schooled us on.
The season finale will arrive next Wednesday so it is only right that the episode leading to it awards us with some jaw-dropping moments and big shockers. This episode did not disappoint as we said goodbye to another Wayward Pines citizen.
It is apparent now that the past is something that no one in this town can run from, so of course the episode started off with a flashback.
David Pilcher is visiting Walcott Prep, a school that only accepts the elitist of students. Pilcher is conversing with a wealthy mother who desires to cover up the pregnancy of her daughter, Abigail. Pilcher and the mother make plans for him to take the baby, because of course you do not need a teen mother tarnishing your family’s noble image. Pilcher decides to meet Abigail who is invested in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. They discuss a passage from the book and Pilcher discloses that he will name her child Jason. Hmm, so we finally meet the mother who gave birth to that spawn…or so we think.
The show flashes forward to a chaotic present day. Jason, Dr. Yedlin, CJ, and Kerry are conferring with each other over the different options for the future of Wayward Pines, and they appear to only have two. Either place everyone back to sleep for thousands of years again in the cryogenic chambers, or die a painful death at the hands of the unforgiving Abbies. As you guessed, the first option sounds best.
Jason has alerted the citizens of a town meeting. At the meeting, the dictator is filling all of his people in on the plan to place them in pods for the preservation of their species. No one seems to want to do this, but as they tell them the other choice (death) everyone gets on board and even urges to go as soon as possible.
“We have a problem.” These are the last words that Jason wants to hear, as CJ just reported to him that only 571 cryogenic chambers are fully operating. This obviously means that only “a little more than half” of the citizens lives will be pardoned.
A distraught Jason gives this news to Dr. Yedlin. He also demands that the doctor gives him a report on the citizens that are not “defective.” The word also translates to “the ones who are not mentally ill and have something to offer” such as babies. Kerry, Jason’s love interest, cannot have babies. One of the highlights of this season has been Dr. Yedlin’s ability to see right through Jason. He is able to detect Jason’s plans for Kerry, which is actually that he is not planning for her at all. Yes, it was complete rubbish when he said in last week’s episode that he would love her despite her inability to birth children. This stinks as we were just starting to warm up to the first-generation brat.
Now, we have to flashback to the past because things are about to get twisted.
Pilcher just received a call with some bad news. Abigail, the Walcott Prep student, just miscarried. While this is exciting news for her self-serving mother, this is Pilcher’s worst nightmare as he needs a newborn to embark with him on his journey to the future. But fret not, he found another pregnant girl: Kerry.
Kerry gave birth to a baby boy, and Pilcher's generous donation assured that he got first dibs on the baby. He tells Kerry that the baby will be going to Texas. Kerry and Pilcher have a heart-to-heart and she discloses to him that she wants to move on and that she is tired of being stuck in the past. And it appears that Kerry’s wishes have struck a chord with Pilcher.
We flash forward just a little and find a younger Jason looking through files for a prospective partner. A strong woman by his side, which also means a woman who he can control. He comes across Kerry’s file and this is how the relationship originated between the two.
So have you figured the twist out yet? No worries as the beans are about to be spilled.
Jason, in present day, is searching files to find out who will be the most worthy citizens to go into the future. He comes across a black file for the viewing of authorized members only. It is Kerry’s file. In the file we learn, as well as Jason, that Kerry is his mother. Shocker! The two lovebirds are actually son and daughter.
In comes a clueless Kerry. Jason, obviously rattled by what he just discovered, proceeds to discipline Kerry for not telling him that she had a baby in her past life. This is where a fight breaks out between the two. And it’s not just any old lovers quarrel. It's a knockout, drag-down fight. Jason is about to take the life of his love, and err mother, but Kerry is not having it as they fight for the gun. Then we hear a single shot from the firearm.
We switch to the woods with the fearless Abbies, who are catering to an injured Margaret. And from the looks of the abundant amount of their kind, it seems like next week's season finale will see the beasts go end the lives of the last remaining humans on the planet.
Oh I forgot to let you in on who died. Your great Wayward Pines leader, Jason, took his final breath last night. But don’t act so sad as this is something we all have been hoping for since he began wreaking havoc at the end of season one.
