A 9-year-old Maryland boy named Zion Harvey, got the chance of a lifetime Tuesday, Aug. 2, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Camden Yards and have his photo taken with Baltimore Orioles star Adam Jones.
Harvey of Owings Mills, is the first child to ever successfully undergo a double-hand transplant. At just two years old, he developed a life-threatening infection which caused him to lose his hands and feet. Last summer, he underwent a ten-hour bilateral hand transplant surgery at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
After his surgery, Harvey rehabbed and worked hard to regain the basic functions in his hands. Now, within one year of that surgery he threw out a great first pitch to Jones and then watched his team go on to defeat the Texas Rangers 5-1.
