The success of The Colbert Report failed to follow Larry Wilmore with his Comedy Central spinoff, The Nightly Show, as it has just been nixed by the network.

The final episode of the year-and-a-half old series is scheduled for this Thursday, Aug. 18.

"I'm really grateful to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart and our fans" the former Daily Show correspondent told THR. "But I'm also saddened and surprised we won't be covering this crazy election or 'The Unblackening' as we've coined it."

Comedy Central president, Kent Alterman, attributed The Nightly Show's cancellation to it not being able to affix to the viewers.

"Unfortunately, it hasn't connected with our audience in ways that we need it to, both in linear channel and in terms of multi-platform outlets and with shareable content and on social platforms as well," Alterman disclosed.

Ultimately, the viewership of The Nightly Show for the duration of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions sealed Wilmore's fate.

"When we take a hard look, especially after the conventions where we also didn't see any traction we where hoping for" Alterman continued, "we didn't have enough evidence to justify committing to another year."

Nightly premiered at the beginning of 2015 following Stephen Colbert's Comedy Central exit as he became the successor to David Letterman on The Late Night Show.

Comedy Central will swap out Wilmore's doomed series with Chris Hardwick's @Midnight, a game show that fares better in ratings, which will temporarily be bumped up to 11:30 pm EST until the Viacom-owned network can find a permanent replacement for the vacancy.
