On August 5, Netflix released the American version of The Little Prince, a film that expands upon the children’s book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The art in the film and the story itself are equally beautiful and mesmerizing.
A little girl being raised by a single ambitious mother is being groomed for private school. In fact, her mother has every minute of every day planned for the girl, who doesn’t know to be upset about it until she meets with the chaos of the young-at-heart aviator who lives next door. As she listens to his stories, she learns to use her imagination and about the true meaning of life and love. He tells her the tale of meeting the Little Prince and how he changed his life. When his health fails, the girl sets off to find the Little Prince in the hopes that he will help him pull through.
The Little Prince was a favorite story of mine when I was a child. My father read it to me. This film truly lives up to the magic of the story and expands upon it with an extraordinary story all its own. The artwork was absolutely gorgeous and the additional plot line added to the story, rather than detracting from it. I was nervous going in, but I was stunned at the beauty of it all.
This movie is safe for kids of all ages. It teaches them to judge the essential moments in life by how they make you feel. That’s an important lesson for anyone. Break it out for your next family movie night. You won’t be sorry. You can’t buy it on DVD and Blu-ray yet. It’s only on Netflix, but it’s a must-watch if you have the service.
