If you woke up this morning and saw #savetwitter trending and everyone freaking out about it, we know why and if the site is really planning on shutting down next year over its problematic cyberbullying.
The answer to the question is no, Twitter does not plan on shuttering in 2017. Representatives for the site told The Independent that the rumor is exactly that, just a rumor.
The speculation and trending hashtag is based off the fact that Twitter is having issues with online abuse and many believe the site will be sold or completely shut down due to the growing problem. The number of users on the micro-blogging site have declined recently because of the cyberbulling that goes on so frequently. Even some big name celebrities deactivated their accounts or let them go dark to avoid the internet trolls.
As we previously reported, Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones quit Twitter last month after she faced abuse. In that instance the site decided to ban the person thought to have started that abuse. The actress has since returned to site. In addition Fifth Harmony member Normani Kordei left the platform last week after she was bullied by the trolls. And then there is Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late Robin Williams, who was also bullied off the site after her father's death in 2014 and when she returned, made the choice to always take a break from social media around the anniversary of his death.
So in a nutshell, the truth is Twitter doesn't need to be "saved" because it is not shutting down, but it may need to find a way to shut down the trolls that lurk on the site.
