On Aug. 16, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released their new children’s film The Angry Birds Movie on DVD and Blu-ray. While some merchandising was expected because it’s based on a game, the whole movie unfortunately came off as a giant advertisement.

In the movie, Red is a bird with anger issues. He’s sentenced to anger management classes where he meets Chuck, a speedy bird and Bomb, a bombing bird. When green pigs invade their island and make off with everyone’s eggs, it’s up to these unlikely heroes to save the day. Can they make anger work to their advantage?

The plot of this film is weak. While evil piggies stealing eggs to eat and angry birds fighting back may be a working premise for a game, it really lacks enough storyline for a movie. The film didn’t make a lot of sense. Why did the pigs give the birds a slingshot? How could the Mighty Eagle see the pigs’ island from his home if they had never noticed it before? The attack on pig island was rather ridiculous. Each bird was flung from the slingshot while they made sure you noticed each one’s individual powers that matched up with the game. It made it feel like they were just trying to sell more copies of the video game rather than getting to know the characters.

I don’t suggest this movie for family day. While young children may find this movie funny, I think most adults will see it for the merchandising ploy that it is. You’d be better off picking something that has value for kids and grown-ups alike.
