Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez and two others were killed in a boat crash early Sunday morning in Florida. He was 24 years old.
According to The Associated Press, Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi said a U.S Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat at 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near Government Cut. The bodies were discovered a short time later.
The Miami Marlins released a statement on Twitter regarding Fernandez and announced Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves was cancelled.
Fernandez was scheduled to pitch Sunday but was pushed back to pitch Monday against the New York Mets. Fernandez' last start came on Sept. 20, when he threw a eight inning shutout, striking out 11 batters against the Washington Nationals.
Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred released a statement as well.
"All of Baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández. He was one of our game's great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life."
Fernandez announced on Instagram early this week that his girlfriend was pregnant.
Fernandez finished his career as a two-time All Star and the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year.
