The most decorated Olympian of all time will of course be remembered for his greatness in the pool, but Michael Phelps left us with another memorable image during the Rio Olympics that may be talked about for years to come.
Prior to competing in the 200-meter butterfly, Phelps was spotted on camera listening to headphones with one of the best game faces we have ever seen while his rival, South African swimmer Chad le Clos, shadowboxed in front of him. The image of Phelps' stare down quickly went viral and now, the 31-year-old is explaining what was going through his mind as he displayed his mean face.
"The worst is—I was sitting in the ready room and I remember, like I always know there's always two cameras in the upper right hand corner," he told Jimmy Fallon on Thursday's episode of The Tonight Show. "As I'm making a face, I'm like, 'Yup that's on camera … someone will pick that up tomorrow.'"
Phelps was right about someone picking that image up, but it was well before the next day. Almost immediately after his angry face was shown, it lit up social media and ended up in tons of memes and GIFs.
Another great image the now likely retired athlete gave us was when he went over to his fiancée, Nicole Johnson and son, Boomer, after his big win.
"Coming back how I did, going through the ups and downs that I had through the comeback," Phelps said, "there's no better way to cap off a 24-year career and being able to have Boomer and Nicole in the stands..."
