Brad Pitt did not file a response to Angelina Jolie's divorce petition in hopes that the couple can avoid a bitter battle in court that could be harmful to their children.

TMZ reported that the actor allowed the deadline for a response to pass because that would set things up for a court battle which he believes could put a great deal of emotional distress on their kids. Sources have told the media outlet that Pitt is seeking joint legal and physical custody. When Jolie filed for divorce last month she requested sole physical custody of all six children.

Furthermore, an insider told Us Weekly that the former couple's attorneys are trying to resolve the matter by coming to some type of agreement and Pitt will submit a response once they do.

Jolie and Pitt did have a temporary custody agreement in place up until yesterday, which allowed Pitt to have supervised visits with his children.
