The Detroit Lions will sign running back Justin Forsett to add depth to the running back position.

Forsett worked out with the Lions on Monday and Tuesday before announcing on Twitter that he was signing with the team. His agent Doug Hendrickson also tweeted about the signing.

Forsett was with the Baltimore Ravens for the last two-plus seasons  but was released earlier this month after he lost the starting job to Terrance West. He played three games for the Ravens this season and had 31 carries for 98 yards Sports Illustrated notes. He has rushed for 3,897 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career.

The Lions need help in the backfield after losing Ameer Abdullah to injured reserve last month. Rookie Dwayne Washington has an ankle injury and missed Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Lions are currently at 2-3 and are in third place in the NFC North.
