Singer-songwriter-poet-actor Tom Waits found himself in the newspapers once again this Fall regarding a law suit. This is the most recent in a long line of suits resulting from use of the artist’s music that he deems inappropriate. Considered a champion for music-makers, Waits consistently fights for control over the use of his creative products.

This September, Waits brought legal action against a well-known French avant-garde circus performer called Bartabas the Furious. Bartabas created an evening-length work around 16 songs written by Tom Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan. Waits asserts that Bartabas did not follow an appropriate path to attain proper permissions before opening the show. Bartabas on the other hand, disagrees.

This is not the first incident that brought Waits to court as he attempts to protect his work. The singer-songwriter has always been clear about his unwillingness to let his songs or voice be used in advertising. However, he has such a unique vocal quality and captivating style that multiple companies have simply hired impressionists when Waits declines to partner with them. In each instance, Waits responds with strong and decisive action to protect his creative property.

If you are not familiar with Tom Waits, all of this may seem confusing. Why would so many companies feel compelled to use his songs and voice? What is so special about this artist? For those of you asking these questions, we have assembled our Top 10 songs that act as a guide to Tom Waits.
