While we're used to seeing Ellen Pompeo, 47, in scrubs, this will mark the first time she will be directing on Grey's Anatomy.
The actress, who has portrayed Dr. Meredith Grey for thirteen seasons, will make her directorial debut in February.
For the mother of three, this is the first time she will step behind the camera ever.
Pompeo's co-stars, Kevin McKidd and Chandra Wilson, have directed episodes for the medical soap. McKidd and Wilson play Owen and Bailey respectively. Even Debbie Allen, who portrays Catherine, has been a director.
While actors directing the shows they star in seems like an on-going trend, Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes sees the wealth of experience for her cast.
"Our goal at Shondaland is to hire the best people and then keep them here, but in order to do that, we need to create opportunities for them to grow," Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter. "They have to continue learning and doing what they're passionate about — whether they are an actor that wants to learn how to direct or a PA that wants to take the next step. We love watching them grow and succeed, and this web series was the perfect way to do just that."
The ABC drama has just returned from hiatus and airs at 8 p.m. The episode Pompeo will direct airs later this season.
