Actor Richard Hatch, famous for playing Captain Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica, died on Wednesday, Feb. 7.  He was 71.

According to Hatch's son Paul, the actor was battling pancreatic cancer. Paul also confirmed that his father "died peacefully with his family and friends at his side."

Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore tweeted his condolences yesterday.

Hatch received a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a television series for his role as Captain Apollo.   He also wrote five Battlestar Galactica novels and starred in the remake of Battlestar Galactica from 2004 to 2009, but played a different character, Tom Zarek.  He was the only actor to appear in both the remake and the original series, as reported by BBC News.

His other acting credits include Murder, She Wrote; Baywatch; MacGyver; The Love Boat; Hawaii Five-O and All My Children, where his career began, as reported by NBC News.

Hatch is survived by his son.
