The invitation might say black tie, but to pop group Twenty One Pilots the Grammy’s has no dress code.

After rock and roll duo Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun beat out The Chainsmokers, Rihanna and Sia to win the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Stressed Out,” the pair promptly took off their pants and took to the stage.

As it turns out, their prank held a deeper meaning. Joseph said in his acceptance speech, “This story, it starts in Columbus, Ohio.” He continued to explain that years ago Joseph had called Dun over to his house to watch the Grammys. “As we were watching,” he said, “we noticed every single one of us was in our underwear, and seriously, Josh said to me, and we were no one at the time, he turned to me and he said, ‘If we ever go to the Grammys, if we ever win a Grammy, we should receive it just like this.’”
