After news broke that Darlene Cates, who starred in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, passed away on Sunday her on-screen son, Leonardo DiCaprio, spoke about his co-star.

The actor took to Facebook on Tuesday, March 28, to pay tribute to Cates writing, “Darlene was the best acting mom I ever had the privilege of working alongside. Her endearing personality and incredible talent will live on in the memories of those who knew her, and those who loved her work. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.”

As we reported, the actress who also played Johnny Depp's mother is the movie, died in her sleep at the age of 69. The news was confirmed by Cates' sister, Sheri Cates Morgan, via social media.

“It is with a bitter-sweet heart that we share that our precious wife, mother, and Gaga, Darlene Guthrie Cates, was called Home, somewhat unexpectedly, peacefully in her sleep Sunday morning, March 26th,” Morgan wrote.

In addition to the flim What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Cates also appeared in some television shows in the '90s including Picket Fences and Touched by an Angel.
