The founding member of The J. Geils Band was found dead in his Groton, Massachusetts, home on Tuesday, April 11. He was 71.

USA Today reported that authorities confirmed the death of John Warren Geils Jr., who was professionally known as  J. Geils, was likely from "natural causes." Although an exact cause has not been determined at this time, "foul play is not suspected."

Police went out to the rocker's home around 4 p.m. for a welfare check and found him unresponsive. He was then pronounced dead at the scene.

ET noted that Geils formed the group bearing his name with members with bassist Danny "Dr. Funk" Klein and harmonic player Richard "Magic Dick" Salwitz in 1967. The band is responsible for several top 40 hits including "Give it to Me," "Must of Got Lost," "Love Stinks," "Freeze Frame" and "Centerfold."

The singer moved to Groton in 1982 and the town designated December 1, 2009 as J. Geils Day.
