Leading up to its premiere, Selena Gomez shared her anxieties about the new Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

The executive producer of the series explained how her emotional investment in the show motivated her passion.

"I was loyal to the project for seven years," the 24-year-old told CNN at the Hollywood premiere. "I got a little controlling."

13 Reasons Why follows the story of a teenage girl, Hannah, who leaves behind a series of audio recordings that explain the reasons for her suicide.

Although Gomez was not the boss on set, she took a firm hand on the show. In fact, Gomez's mother was also an executive producer. When they began the project, Gomez admitted how she wanted to do the book justice.

"You get nervous," she said. "You don't know if people are going to like something."

So far, the series has received positive responses from audiences.

Gomez said bullying, depression and suicide are the important things for people to understand after watching the show. She even shared how she struggled with these throughout her life.

"People, no matter what age, can relate to this story," Gomez said. "Everyone has gone through this. And more than ever, this should be talked about today."

She posted on Twitter two days before its release and announced that she was featured on the soundtrack as well.
