Designated Survivor and American Housewife will both be returning to ABC for their second seasons in 2017-18.
Designated Survivor is a political drama starring Kiefer Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, an independent party politician who becomes president after an explosion kills the former president and all of his successors. The series also stars Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, LaMonica Garrett, Tanner Buchanan, Kal Penn and Maggie Q.
American Housewife made it's debut in October of last year. Starring Katy Mixon, the sitcom follows the daily life of Katie Otto, a housewife who is raising a dysfunctional family in a wealthy town full of arrogant and prudish families. The series also stars Diedrich Bader, Meg Donnelly, Daniel DiMaggio, Julia Butters, Ali Wong and Carly Hughes.
The news of these renewals were first reported by Deadline.
Unfortunately, as The Hollywood Reporter noted, Dr. Ken and Secrets and Lies aren't as lucky, as they have both been canceled following their second seasons.
Dr. Ken, a sitcom created by and starring Ken Jeong, was based on Jeong's real-life experience as a cocky, wisecracking medical professional. The show was surprisingly successful during its first season, but ratings declined as the show went on. The series also starred Suzy Nakamura, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Jonathan Slavin, Albert Tsai, Krista Marie Yu, Kate Simses, Dave Foley and Dana Lee.
Secrets and Lies was a mystery anthology series following a different story and cast each season. The first season received favorable ratings, but dropped significantly when season 2 was launched half a year late. The first season starred Ryan Phillippe, Juliette Lewis, KaDee Strickland, Natalie Martinez, Dan Fogler, Indiana Evans, and Belle Shouse. Juliette Lewis returned in season 2 alongside Jordana Brewster, Mekia Cox, Charlie Barnett, Kenny Johnson, Terry O'Quinn and Michael Ealy.
