Jimmy Kimmel used his opening monologue on Monday night to reveal to his audience that his newborn son has undergone open-heart surgery.

The late night talk show host explained that a few hours after he and Molly McNearney's son, Billy, was born on April 21 that a nurse noticed something was wrong with the child.

“My wife was in bed relaxing when a very attentive nurse at Cedars-Sinai heard a murmur in his heart and noticed he was a bit purple, which is not common,” Kimmel said through tears. “[Nurses] determined he wasn’t getting enough oxygen in his blood, either in his heart or lungs ... It’s a terrifying thing, you know my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what’s going on.”

Billy's doctors discovered that he was born with a congenital heart disease and that there was a “hole in the wall of the left and right sides of his heart.”

Kimmel then shared that Billy had successful open-heart surgery at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and is now at home recovering. Billy will still have to undergo two more surgeries as he gets older, one invasive and one non-invasive procedure.

“Poor kid, not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face,” Kimmel said jokingly.

The 49-year-old thanked his family and friends for all the love and support he and his wife McNearney have received.

“Every one of my friends was there 100 percent. We had atheists praying for us, okay? We had people who do not believe in God praying to him. And I hate to even say, but even that son-of-a-bitch Matt Damon sent flowers,” the comedian said.

On Tuesday, Kimmel took to Twitter to thank his fans for their kind messages after hearing the news.
