MTV has announced that it will be adding "Trending" and "Best Musical Moment" to the categories for the 2017 Movie & TV Awards premiering on May 7. These new categories are an effort to branch away from traditional categories and bring award shows into the social media age.
According to MTV's press release on Tuesday, May 2, the Trending category will feature "some of the greatest viral moments in movies and television from the past year." The nominees include SNL's “Sean Spicer Press Conference” feat. Melissa McCarthy, The Late Show's “Lady Gaga Carpool Karaoke,” Dr. Phil's “Cash Me Outside How Bout Dat,” Spike's "Run The World (Girls)” with Channing Tatum and Beyonce, Jimmy Fallon's “Wheel of Musical Impressions with Demi Lovato” and Winona Ryder’s winning reaction from TNT's SAG Awards.

This category is presented by Time, Inc.'s INSTANT, which will announce the winner prior to the main show during the MTV Movie & TV Awards Festival. Fans can vote for their favorite Trending moment on MTV.com.
MTV stated that the Best Musical Moment category "celebrates the use of song in movies and television." The network is partnering with musical.ly to allow fans to create their own music videos from the nominated moments. These nominees include Ariana Grande and John Legend's “Beauty and the Beast,” Justin Timberlake's “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Trolls, Auli'i Cravalho's “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's "City of Stars" from La La Land, "You Can't Stop" from Hairspray Live!, Herizen Guardiola's "Be That As It May" from The Get Down and "You're the One That I Want" from Grease: Live.
The video with the most likes on the musical.ly app will be announced as the winner during the main show.
Voting will close on Sunday before the show at 8 p.m. EST.
