Based on the New York Times bestselling fantasy novel saga by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher has been adapted into one of the most popular action role-playing video game series in recent years.

Now, Netflix has announced in a press release that the development of an English-language TV show adaptation of The Witcher has begun.

The Witcher saga focuses on monster hunters with supernatural abilities known as "witchers."

Sapkowski himself will be working with Netflix as a creative consultant for the new series, stating, “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.”

The series will be executive produced by Sean Daniel, producer of The Mummy franchise and The Expanse, along with Jason Brown, who also produced The Expanse. Polish production company Platige Image will also be heavily involved. Director of the intro videos for The Witcher video games, Tomas Baginski, will direct at least one episode.

"There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre," said Platige Image’s Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko, "it is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”
