Just don't ask us what it is we're looking at, because we don't know.

Ex Machina was one of the breakout hits of 2015. Director Alex Garland released this small film that was on nobody’s radar, which wound up receiving universal praise and being one of the best original sci-fi films to come out in the past few years. Now, the fates are all aligning for Garland to repeat his success, as the first trailer for his newest sci-fi film Annihilation was just released:

We love it. We don’t know what any of this is or what it means, but we love it.

Natalie Portman is seemingly playing an explorer of some kind. She’s entering this weird, bubble looking world — one that might be full of mythical creatures as we see in the shot below. And judging by her response when asked “Can you describe its form?,” she doesn’t really understand it either.

However — it all seems to have some kind of ties to her husband, played by Oscar Isaac. It looks like he ventured into this land at some point in the past, and something happened to him there. Portman, now, is looking for answers.

We’re looking for answers too, but we’re probably not going to get them until the film is released on Feb. 23, 2018. This looks incredible though, much in the same vein as Arrival or District 9. And Isaac and Garland have done great work together in the past — remember this insane scene from Ex Machina?

Apart from Portman and Isaac, Annihilation will also star Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Tessa Thompson (Creed) and Gina Rodriguez (Deepwater Horizon).
