Alice Cooper says that his faith saved him from the rockstar lifestyle.
Alice Cooper opens up about his past this week as he is set to play King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert on Easter Sunday. He says that he had a wakeup call 40 years ago when he found himself throwing up blood.
Cooper told the New York Daily News Confidential, “Everything that could go wrong was shutting down inside of me.”
The legendary rocker recalled, “I was drinking with Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix and trying to keep up with Keith Moon and they all died at 27.”
Cooper knew this was the moment that he needed to stop drinking or he too was going to die young. So he turned to his faith.
One of Cooper’s friends was Glen Campbell, who passed away in August 2017. They were at opposite ends of the music spectrum ー Campbell was country, and Cooper is rock ー but the two bonded because of similar experiences - closeness with their faith.

Cooper, whose father was a pastor, had gone away from the church until his close call with death. He acknowledges that many people do not think that he can be a rockstar and also be a Christian.
Cooper says that “people have a very warped view of Christianity. They think that Christians can do no wrong and that just pray all day.” He believes that “being Christian is about a one on one relationship with Jesus Christ.”
The TV-concert, this weekend, will be Cooper’s second time playing the role of King Herod; he originally played the role in the 1996 London revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. When it comes to the interpretation of his character, Cooper says his portrayal “comes from Alan Rickman as Professor Snape in Harry Potter.”
