Battle Royale on a New Level
Ashland University is now offering scholarship money for students to play Fortnite for their competitive esports team.
The University in Ohio will now offer $4,000 in scholarship money to students who meet the academic and skill requirements. Ashland already has a competitive esports team with games like Overwatch and League of Legends. But, they are hoping to expand their games to Fortnite.
Ashland is the first university to offer scholarship money for esports. However, there are currently 63 schools in the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE).
With schools now offering scholarships for video games, this could be part of a new push for schools to make esports an official varsity sport.
This is a huge victory for several people. One, for kids who play a lot of video games and now have an excuse for their hard work. Two, for Ashland, putting their school at the forefront of esports gaming with a great PR move. And three, for Fortnite, which is currently the most watched streaming game on Twitch and YouTube while also attracting millions of online players.
