Kelis, Singer/songwriter turned chef has recently been locked in a custody battle with Nas over their son Knight. Now she is revealing the abusive relationship she formally had with the iconic rapper, and she is not afraid to stand up and talk about the damage Nas did to her.

Kelis was interviewed by Hollywood Unlocked CEO Jason Lee which was published April 26.

Singer of Milkshake, Kelis, talks about the events surrounding her divorce to rapper Nas. Kelis had been pregnant with their son Knight.

Kelis let out, “There was a lot of mental and physical abuse."

Kelis has stayed quiet since the divorce. Since then, she has become a chef with her successful brand Bounty & Full. Kelis is a mother of two sons, Knight, 8, and Sheperd, 2, and has remarried.

“I’m living my life. I’m cooking. I’m raising my kids and I’m very private."

So her custody battle with Nas certainly affects her private life.

“His memory is definitely faulty. I’ve waited 9 years to say anything. I have never talked about this man. The amount of airing out that I could do and don’t do is what our kids will find out.”

She describes the relationship as if it were a rollercoaster, the couple living in the fast life.

“We had really intense highs and really intense lows. It was never normal. An intense high would be when money was rolling in. But I was 22 when I met him. We were drinking a lot, getting high a lot. So when that comes down, it was bad... An intense low….we had a lot. It was really dark. A lot of drinking. A lot of mental and physical abuse and it got to the point where if I wasn’t pregnant, I might have stayed with him.”

Pregnancy made her realize the relationship would lead to nowhere.

“I was pregnant and it was a mess and I felt like I wasn’t going to bring a child into this,"

When she was asked about the physical abuse she said, “Did he hit me?…..Mmm hmmm. Did I hit him back?…..Mmm hmmm.”

When Kelis saw the photo of Rihanna’s face from the abuse by Chris Brown in February 2009, which led her out of the relationship, “When the Rihanna and Chris Brown pictures came out I thought about coming out because I also had bruises all over my body. But I didn’t say anything because I’m private. But seeing her the way she looked and then looking at myself… I felt embarrassed.”

It seems men in power have a nasty habit of stretching reality in the justification of abuse, or just plain lack of empathy when holding a position of power, like Cosby.

Now problems have resurfaced in 2018. Kelis is making public statements about their custody battle over Knight.

Apparently what Nas does is that he, “shows up when there’s a photo opp... A parent isn’t about showing up when you feel like it. You can’t not show up for months and then show up and try to make up your own [visitation] schedule.”

Kelis also called Nas a “fraud."

Kelis also made statements about domestic abuse and the position woman are in.

“Women can’t be afraid to fight”.

She is speaking out and is encouraging others to speak out, which is happening in conjunction with the #MeToo Movement.

Kelis also stated she is an investor in The Jane Club, a work and community space that tend to women and the working mother. Certainly, the pay will be equal and maternity leave is not going to be heckled over.

Nas meanwhile remains quiet, according to Hollywood Unlocked.

Kelis is making the right move and speaking out. It seems, from her words that she is not the only one while she sets an example for others who have suffered abusive experiences.

This is part of the systemic abuse in mainstream culture, which has usually catered to men, who have held the power for a long time. Abusive relationships will remain systemic until new cultural norms form where man and woman see each other as persons and it can be partially stopped by speaking out and being brave.
