HBO’s True Detective doesn’t have a great track-record when it comes to keeping their directors, and the news of Jeremy Saulnier departing the show after completing the first two episodes definitely doesn’t help.
Saulnier, best known for directing the indie-horror films Blue Ruin and Green Room (which is a great movie, if you have the stomach for it), reportedly had to leave the project after scheduling conflicts arise. The True Detective season 3 production apparently was taking longer than expected, leaving Saulnier with no other option.
He is being replaced by Daniel Sackheim and series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who will divide up the remaining six episodes between themselves.
“Director and executive producer Jeremy Saulnier has completed the first two episodes of True Detective Season 3 and will be departing the production due to scheduling issues. Daniel Sackheim has come on board as a director and executive producer for the series alongside series creator and director Nic Pizzolatto,” HBO said in a statement via Variety.
Sackheim has directed plenty of television before; including Ozark, Better Call Saul, The Leftovers, Game of Thrones, The Man in the High Castle, Fear the Walking Dead, The Americans the upcoming Jack Ryan and many more.
Pizzolatto has served as a writer and producer on True Detective since the very beginning. He also wrote the screenplay for 2016’s The Magnificent Seven.
It’s taken a long time to get season three of True Detective off the ground, and this news certainly doesn’t help.
The third season was confirmed in August 2017 after the underwhelming second season. So far, we know that it this season will be set in the Ozarks and will star Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer and Ray Fisher.
