The Riggs and Murtaugh bromance is over after 31 years.
Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh have been partners since Mel Gibson and Danny Glover began portraying them in 1987's Lethal Weapon movie. The torch was passed to Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans in 2016 as the movie series was rebooted into a television show.
Clayne Crawford was fired from his role as Riggs just before the season finale aired.
Fans worldwide are devastated by his firing, commenting on his Instagram post where he confirmed the news.
@claynecrawford from South Africa it is indeed disappointing news. They have no idea what they are going miss, the show will never be the same again. In the end they have shot themselves in the foot, their loss. They are definitely going to loose a lot of fans, including myself. I wish you all the best, and bigger better projects to come your way.
Hello, in France we are in season 2. I am very sad to learn that you will no longer be part of the cast?. I m sure we ll see you again?. I love you!?
Well done from the UK ?? , great pairing that has made the series so far. You will be missed, good luck on the future ??
But why was he fired? Bad behavior on set. Deadline reported that he was the subject of “complaints of emotional abuse and creating a hostile environment,” getting so bad the cast and crew didn't want to work with him.
Crawford, however, claims his outbursts were in regards to safety on set. Believable when you watch what Riggs does each episode, whether it's being shot at, jumping off or across buildings, standing on the edge of roofs and so much more.
“I take great pride in treating everyone in life with dignity and kindness,” Crawford wrote in an apology letter. “I am very grateful for my job, and I work extremely hard at it. I have a responsibility to do good work for my coworkers, my family, and my home state, and most especially for the fans. I hope they will stick with me and stick with the show.”
Warner Bros. took the choice away from FOX holding off on renewing Lethal Weapon until serious cast changes were made.
“Warner Bros. Television has decided not to renew Clayne Crawford’s contract for Lethal Weapon,” FOX studio said in a statement to USA Today.
Coming in to replace Crawford is Seann William Scott who is best known for his role as Steve Stifler in the American Pie series. He can also be heard as the possum Crash in the Ice Age movies.
Rumor has it that Scott will not replace Crawford as Riggs, but as Murtaugh's partner.
The question remains - is Damon Wayans enough to keep Lethal Weapon going? We will have to wait and see.
