Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is out this weekend and, well, take my advice and go see Incredibles 2 again instead. Or just rewatch all the Rocky movies and Creed like I’m going to do in light of the new Creed II trailer. All this and more on this week’s Trailers by Brandon.

Opening this week:

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Oh man. I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece, but oh man. My full review is coming out soon, but this one really hurt me. Maybe it’s because Jurassic Park is an absolute masterpiece and one of my all-time favorite movies, but Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom….yikes. It’s not great guys, it’s really not.

Damsel

I covered the trailer for Damsel a few weeks back on Trailers by Brandon, but I’m still intrigued by the light tone in this setting. We’ve seen similar things before — namely Slow West, which I really liked — so I’m curious how this one plays out.

The Catcher Was A Spy

The first baseman was a butcher, shortstop was a baker and way out in right-field you’ll find the candlestick maker. That’s all I got for this one.

New trailers:

Creed II (Nov. 21, 2018)

Uh, yes please. Up until this week, I wasn’t sure if Creed II was a movie I actually wanted to see. The first Creed worked so well as a stand-alone that it seemed hard to imagine a full-on franchise would be able to keep that same energy up. This trailer seems to prove otherwise. Even with a new director, Creed II looks like a natural progression of Adonis’ story and Michael B. Jordan looks like he’s about to knock another performance out of the park.

Welcome to Marwen (Nov. 21, 2018)

Welcome to Marwen and Creed II are coming out on the same day and I don’t know which one I want to see first. I don’t remember ever seeing a trailer quite like Welcome to Marwen either, as this looks incredibly unique and pretty ingenious. Robert Zemeckis has made a lot of good movies in the past ten years, but it’s been awhile since we’ve seen him make one that’s truly great. Welcome to Marwen might change that.

Like Father (August 3, 2018)

Netflix doesn’t always do their original sci-fi or high-concept films so great — and we’re going to talk about a trailer that seems to prove that in just a second. They are, however, pretty good at more simplistic stories: something horror based like The Ritual (which gets better and better the more I think about it) or a romantic comedy like this one. Like Father might not be ground-breaking, but it looks sweet and sentimental, which is something I can get behind.

Tau (June 29, 2018)

Go ahead and count me out on this one though, because this looks dumb. Gary Oldman, who just won an Oscar for Winston Churchill, is now voicing an evil house. No, really, you read that right — he’s an evil house. This industry never ceases to amaze me.

Little Women (Sept. 28, 2018)

I’m sure there’s a pretty sizable audience for Little Women who will go see this movie and come away having a great time. Having never read the source material or seen any of the previous incarnations though, I’m pretty sure I’m not a part of that audience and will, therefore, be taking a pass on this one.

Rewind:

Jurassic Park: The Lost World

Yes, okay, I know it’s totally on-the-nose with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom coming out this weekend but I don’t care because this movie gets way more hate than it deserves. Someday, I’m going to write a full-on op-ed piece defending The Lost World, because this movie is actually, in my mind, really good. No, it can’t quite live up to Jurassic Park, but what can? Take out the gymnastic scene and you have an incredibly well-paced and well-acted dinosaur flick with some GREAT sequences — that scene with the trailer hanging off the cliff is nothing short of brilliant. Do yourself a favor and give The Lost World another chance.
